St. James Art Fair 2026: Event Photography in Old Louisville

St. James Art Fair 2026: Event Photography in Old Louisville

The oppressive heat of summer is finally over and fall is finally here. Shooting a Louisville tradition like the St. James Art Fair was an incredible way to welcome the new season and I had lots of fun walking around Old Louisville, taking some great shots, and basking in all the fantastic art. Needless to say, I felt in my element.

Old Louisville Deserves Its Flowers

It’s easy to forget just how beautiful Old Louisville is. It’s a neighborhood that deserves its flowers and tourists from all over the world should make a point to see this historic neighborhood at least once. The houses are amazing, the fountain is beautiful, and the people are wonderful. And for one week in September, the neighborhood transforms into one of the nation’s most lauded fine art markets.

Walking through St. James Court with a camera is one of those assignments that reminds you why you got into photography in the first place. The Victorian architecture, the tree-lined streets, the light filtering through the canopy in the late afternoon - every direction you turn is a shot worth taking.

Shooting the St. James Art Fair for Cambrium Marketing

I was asked to shoot this event by Cambrium Marketing, a local agency that manages all the key marketing efforts for the St. James Art Fair. I shot roughly 3 hours and delivered roughly 200 pictures - my favorite of which are presented here in this blog post. Cambrium requested images that showcased the event attendees as well as some of the musical acts. They put less priority on showcasing vendors, which could change from year to year.

My approach for event photography like this is to stay mobile and shoot candidly. The best event photos aren’t posed - they’re the ones where people are laughing, leaning in to look at a piece of art, or dancing to live music without noticing the camera. That’s what makes event photography different from studio work. You’ve got one chance to catch the moment and the light is always changing.

What I Delivered

For this event, Cambrium received a curated gallery of around 200 final images within a week of the event. Every image was color-corrected and edited for consistency. The deliverables included wide crowd shots for social media, tight detail shots of the art and performances, and candid moments that captured the atmosphere of the fair.

This is pretty standard for how I handle event photography in Louisville - whether it’s a festival like St. James, a corporate event, a grand opening, or a private party. You get a full gallery of edited images delivered digitally, ready for web, print, and social.
